It’s recommended to contact the relevant Program officer (PO) prior to submission. You may send the PO an abstract to ask if your research proposal is appropriate to their program.
Here’s a webinar given by a PO from the NSF with various tips.
Here’s a list of the documents that the Israeli PI should send to the U.S. PI for the NSF submission:
1. Budget and Budget justification. The Israeli PI should open the application on the BSF website in order to fill in the budget and send it to the U.S. PI. Experimental research may ask up to $80k/yr and Theoretical research may ask up to $55k/yr.
2. NSF biosketch.
- Effective October 4, 2021, the page limitation will be increased to 3 pages for each individual identified as senior personnel.
- The NSF requires use of the fillable biosketch PDF template or the use of SciENcv to generate a compliant biosketch. Details, options, FAQs, and template are available here: https://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/biosketch.jsp
3. List of collaborators. Template must be used. Instructions and template are available here: https://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/coa.jsp
4. Current & pending support.
- No page limit.
- The NSF requires use of the fillable Current & Pending PDF template or the use of SciENcv to generate a compliant C&P document. Details, options, FAQs, and template are available here: https://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/cps.jsp
- The NSF-BSF Collaborative proposal will need to be included as a Pending proposal. The dollar amount should be based on the Hebrew U budget.
5. Institutional letter of support. Please send us the application title, your collaborator’s name and affiliation, so we can prepare and send you the letter.
In regard to the BSF submission, only after your collaborator submits the application to the NSF you will need to upload the full proposal that was submitted to the NSF including everything (it’s around 80 pages in a pdf file) with the NSF application number on the cover page. If the file is larger than 3MB, which is usually the case, you need to send it to Yael yael@bsf.org.il, so she can upload it directly. You will also have to fill in the schedule and upload the abstract, lay abstract, update you cv and then submit the BSF application.

The new flagship grants program of the German-Israeli Foundation replaces GIF’s two previous grant programs, the GIF Regular Program and the GIF Young Scientists’ Program, offering a single unified program to fund young scientists and established researchers in parallel tracks.
Focal topics replace the recurring cycles by research area.
The collaborative track for joint proposals by German and Israeli researchers funds projects of up to 4 years, with an annual budget of maximum EUR 150,000 total for all PIs (i.e the maximum project budget is EUR 300,000 for 2 years).
The young investigator track for solo researchers up to 8 years after their doctoral degree funds one-year projects with a maximum budget of EUR 25,000.
The goal of Nexus is to promote scientific excellence through collaboration between German and Israeli teams of scientists.
The application procedure includes a pre-proposal stage, based on which only submissions of the highest scientific excellence are invited to submit a full proposal. Mutual visits in the collaborative track respectively a visit to the partner country in the young investigator track are a mandatory part of the project.
